Historic Hulks

Historic Hulks

A view of the River Severn at Purton, Gloucestershire from the ships' graveyard. The hulk in the foreground was beached here in order to assist in the prevention of river bank erosion. An added extra in this view, seen embedded in the river silt, is the hulk of one of the petrol barges that caused the destruction of the old Severn Railway Bridge on the night of 25 October 1960. To complete the scene, on the right bank of the river, GWR Castle Class loco no. 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' heads down towards Chepstow with the 'Welsh Marches Express', Saturday 25 March 2017.
