The View from Level 4
There is nothing quite like a 1960's multi-storey car park for defining architectural monstrosity. This example, on the east bank of the River Usk in Newport, Gwent, is typical, although it lacks the grand scale of some of the classics such as the Tricorn in Portsmouth or Trinity Square in Gateshead, (see the cult film 'Get Carter'). You can park here all day for £2, although the numerous signs warning of vandals and drug addicts are something of a disincentive. The resident security guard came to check me out and was as good as gold, a credit to his trade.
On the afternoon of Friday 15 February 2019, a Class 166 DMU (166218) of GWR heads up the line as one local is entranced by her mobile phone.
